Exeter City Announce Double Swoop As Recruitment Heats Up

Exeter City have strengthened their defensive ranks with the loan signing of Aston Villa’s Sil Swinkels and confirmed the return of veteran midfielder Kevin McDonald.

The double announcement boosts both youth and experience within Gary Caldwell’s squad ahead of the new League One campaign.

Grecians Land Swinkels and Re-Sign McDonald

Dutch centre-back Swinkels, 21, joins on a season-long loan from Premier League side Aston Villa. The 6ft 3 defender arrives with League One experience, having spent the second half of last season at Bristol Rovers, where he made 18 appearances and scored twice. His debut goal came deep into stoppage time against Stockport County, underlining his presence at both ends of the pitch.

A product of Vitesse Arnhem’s youth system before joining Villa in 2020, Swinkels was part of the club’s FA Youth Cup-winning side in 2021 and featured in their Birmingham Senior Cup triumph in 2024. He also famously made a first-team debut during the FA Cup tie with Liverpool in 2021, when Villa fielded a youth side due to a COVID outbreak.

Gary Caldwell expressed his enthusiasm about the signing:

“Sil is a young centre-half we have been chasing all summer, from his loan at Bristol Rovers last year. He had a difficult time in terms of the team, but we feel that experience will stand him in good stead. He will have a big impact for us as both a centre back and left centre back. He is a really important signing for us.”

Swinkels, who will wear the number 16 shirt, becomes the club’s fourth loan addition, following Ethan Brierley, Joe Whitworth and Ryan Rydel. His first appearance could come in a pre-season fixture against FC United of Manchester.

Exeter also confirmed that Kevin McDonald has agreed to return for another season. The 36-year-old initially joined the Grecians in January 2023, had a stint with Bradford City, then rejoined Exeter in November 2024. Now back for a third spell, McDonald will continue to contribute on the pitch while taking on increased coaching responsibilities.

Caldwell said:

“This is the third time we have signed him! He’s a great person to have around the group, with great experience and great quality. He’s getting on, but he showed last year he can still contribute. He also has a wider role to play off the pitch where he starts to do some more coaching to assist his future career.”

Writer’s View

This is an encouraging day for Exeter City. In Swinkels, they have secured a promising young defender who already has League One experience and a winning mentality from his Villa academy days. His physical attributes and composure suggest he could be a regular starter.

Meanwhile, re-signing Kevin McDonald is a clever move. His on-field leadership and off-field mentorship will be invaluable to a squad that blends youth with ambition. It’s another sign that Caldwell is building a side with strong foundations and depth in key areas.
