Barnsley have completed the signing of midfielder Patrick Kelly from West Ham United, with the 20-year-old penning a three-year deal at Oakwell.
The agreement also includes an option for a fourth year, as the League One club continue to reshape their squad under new head coach Conor Hourihane.
Reds Beat Rivals to Secure Northern Ireland U21 Star
Kelly arrives in South Yorkshire with growing pedigree, having helped Doncaster Rovers to the League Two title last season during a successful loan spell. He made 38 appearances in all competitions for Rovers, scoring three times, and was a regular starter during their impressive campaign.
Originally from Northern Ireland, Kelly began his career at Coleraine before earning a move to Premier League side West Ham in June 2022. His impact was immediate at youth level, playing a key role in the Hammers’ 2022–23 double-winning U18 side that clinched both the FA Youth Cup and the U18 Premier League South title.

Hourihane Praises Dynamic Addition to Midfield
Kelly has also built an impressive international record, featuring in all ten of Northern Ireland U21s’ European Championship qualifying matches over the past year. His combination of technical ability, work ethic and tactical maturity has made him a standout among his age group.
Sporting Director Mladen Sormaz described the signing as one the club had monitored for some time.
“He’s shown real maturity for his age, with a strong grounding at West Ham and valuable senior experience contributing to Doncaster’s title win last season,” Sormaz said. “We believe he has all the attributes to develop into a top midfielder.”
Head coach Conor Hourihane was similarly enthusiastic:
“He’s a dynamic, intelligent midfielder who fits the way we want to play. He’s already tasted success in a promotion-winning team, which will stand him in good stead.”
Writer’s View
This is an eye-catching signing for Barnsley and another clear signal of their intent under Conor Hourihane. Patrick Kelly isn’t just a player for the future—he’s already demonstrated he can influence games at senior level and brings the kind of mobility and intelligence that should complement the Reds’ existing midfield options.
Having tasted promotion success with Doncaster and boasting a winning mentality from his time at West Ham, Kelly could be one of the more astute acquisitions of the League One window. If he settles quickly, expect him to be a mainstay in Barnsley’s starting XI.
For a club targeting promotion, securing talent with both pedigree and potential like this is exactly the right approach.
