Cambridge United Seal Agreement With Experience Midfielder

Cambridge United have confirmed the signing of Shane McLoughlin on a one-year contract, adding experience and versatility to their midfield as the new League Two season approaches.

The 28-year-old arrives at the Cledara Abbey Stadium following a productive trial period and becomes the U’s eighth new arrival of the summer.

Experienced McLoughlin Adds Depth and Flexibility to Neil Harris’ Squad

McLoughlin, who was most recently with Newport County, has enjoyed a varied career across the EFL and brings over 200 senior appearances to the United dressing room. Comfortable as both a midfielder and defender, his addition is expected to boost Neil Harris’ tactical flexibility and provide valuable cover across several positions.

The former AFC Wimbledon and Morecambe player impressed in two pre-season outings, convincing Harris and his coaching staff to offer a permanent deal. McLoughlin, who spent last season as a regular starter at Newport and contributed six goals, turned down a contract extension in South Wales in order to pursue a fresh opportunity with the U’s.

Harris Praises Attitude and Versatility of New Arrival

Speaking after completing the signing, McLoughlin said he was excited to join a club he sees as well-placed for success this season.

“It’s a big club for this division and I am raring to get back into it now,” he said. “I have been in the last week and have gotten an idea of what the club is about, what the manager wants this season and what the lads are striving for.”

McLoughlin’s career has included spells at Ipswich Town, AFC Wimbledon, Morecambe, Salford City, and Newport County. His most recent league campaign saw him rack up 70 appearances across two seasons in South Wales, further establishing his reputation as a consistent and committed professional.

With Cambridge keen to improve on last season’s finish, his signing adds further quality to a squad already bolstered by several promising arrivals.

Writer’s View

This is a smart, low-risk move from Cambridge United. Shane McLoughlin’s versatility, professionalism, and EFL experience make him an ideal depth option for a League Two campaign. He may not be a headline grabber, but players like McLoughlin often prove invaluable across a 46-game season.

Neil Harris clearly values character as much as talent, and McLoughlin ticks both boxes. His ability to slot into multiple roles gives Cambridge greater tactical flexibility and provides dependable cover in the inevitable spells of injury or suspension. If the U’s are serious about challenging at the top end of the table, depth of this nature will be crucial.
