Wigan Athletic Target Championship Midfielder

Wigan Athletic have transformed their attacking line this summer and according to reports, they are beginning to add the supporting crew.

Ryan Lowe’s side have signed three strikers so far this season after losing Dale Taylor following the end of his loan move. The first through the door was Portsmouth’s Christian Saydee, and was later joined by Paul Mullin on a season-long loan from Wrexham and Dara Costelloe after paying an undisclosed fee to Burnley.

Cooper Is Next Target

Alan Nixon has reported on his Patreon page that Wigan are now looking at Swansea City attacking midfielder Ollie Cooper. The 25-year-old has made just 10 starts for The Jacks in the Championship last season, and has been a regular substitute option under the tenure of new boss Alan Sheehan during the latter stages of last season.

A boyhood Swans player, Cooper has made 116 appearances for the club since 2020, with a loan move to Newport County in the middle. He has also broken through into the Welsh national team and has recorded five caps since 2023.

He is currently under contract until 2027, after penning a long-term deal three years ago whilst the club was managed by Russell Martin. However, he was displaced during the second half of last season as the club loaned in former Huddersfield Town man Lewis O’Brien from Nottingham Forest.

Writers’ View

Alan Sheehan now needs to make a major decision. He seemed not to trust Ollie Cooper to deliver across a full ninety minutes during his tenure and Lewis O’Brien was given the reins to keep a starting spot since joining on loan in February. Cooper is a very capable player in the Championship but if his future is not at Swansea City then it seems that Wigan Athletic are a good destination, even if it is a division down. Ryan Lowe has built a brand-new front line and now needs someone to replace Thelo Aasgaard after his sale to Luton Town, and the 25-year-old will be a great option to sit behind his forwards.
