Wigan Athletic Eye Second Striker Following Paul Mullin News

Wigan Athletic‘s quest to sign a new forward line has seen them enter the race for Dara Costelloe, according to Alan Nixon.

The Latics have been in a rebuild of their forward line, and Ryan Lowe has previously admitted that he would target strikers who may not have had success in recent seasons to fill the void left by the departing Dale Taylor. They have already confirmed one incoming, with Christian Saydee arriving in Lancashire from Portsmouth.

Wigan Eye Double Signing

Wigan look to have already completed another move for their forward line, with Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke reporting that they are in advanced talks to sign Wrexham outcast Paul Mullin on a season-long loan. A former top scorer in League One whilst at Cambridge United, the striker was frozen out of Phil Parkinson’s plans as the Red Dragons ascended into the Championship.

Now, according to Alan Nixon, Lowe is targeting more youth in their attack with a move for Dara Costelloe from Burnley. The 22-year-old has failed to break through at Turf Moor, with loan moves to Bradford City, Accrington Stanley and most recently Northampton Town. The Irish youth international scored six times in 15 matches for Kevin Nolan’s Cobblers.

They are not alone in pursuit for Costelloe, with Leyton Orient and Milton Keynes Dons both interested in his services. Orient are also in need of new attackers following the loss of standout forward Charlie Kelman as he returns from his loan to Queens Park Rangers, whilst the League Two side have already made big splashes in the market with a large-figure fee for Bolton Wanderers’ Aaron Collins.

With Dale Taylor not returning to Wigan Athletic, Ryan Lowe needed to sign a new forward line and if he can get Dara Costelloe over the line, the former Preston North End boss will have done a very successful job. Christian Saydee, Paul Mullin and Dara Costelloe make a perfect blend of experience, youth and versatility and alongside existing youngster Maleace Asamoah, they should be set for the season. Costelloe had his best loan yet whilst at Northampton Town and if he can build upon that moving to The Latics, he can surely make himself a starting eleven regular going into next season.
