Former Wigan Athletic Boss Set For Top Flight Role

Former Wigan Athletic manager Shaun Maloney is back in the frame for a return to Scottish football as Dundee search for a new boss.

The 41-year-old is reportedly open to talks with the Dens Park side following the sacking of Tony Docherty at the end of the Premiership campaign.

Maloney’s Managerial Journey Could Lead Back North

The former Hibernian manager previously held discussions with Dundee in 2022, but the job ultimately went to Gary Bowyer, who led them out of the Championship.

Maloney’s most recent managerial role saw him return to Wigan in January 2023 during one of the most turbulent periods in the club’s history. Although he couldn’t prevent relegation from the Championship, he did guide the Latics through an eight-point deduction and a squad overhaul to comfortably secure their League One status the following season.

Wigan’s official statement after his March departure read:

“Shaun was appointed Wigan Athletic Manager in January 2023 during what would be an extremely turbulent period in the Club’s history. Whilst he could not prevent the Club’s relegation from the EFL Championship, Shaun ensured that the Club returned to the third tier with fighting spirit… However, it cannot be overlooked that the current League One campaign has clearly not progressed as anticipated.”

Under Maloney, Wigan remained six points clear of the drop zone despite difficult circumstances. A 2-1 defeat to Reading in March proved to be his final match in charge, ending a spell marked by resilience, youth development, and attempts to modernise the club’s playing style.

Before Wigan, Maloney managed Hibernian between December 2021 and April 2022. His time at Easter Road was brief but formative, with the former Celtic and Aston Villa player introducing tactical changes and new training methodologies. Speaking after his departure, Maloney described it as a “huge learning experience” and praised his squad for their commitment to his ideas.

Dundee, who parted ways with Docherty just 24 hours after securing their Premiership safety, are now seeking a new direction. Maloney’s background, which blends tactical ambition with top-level experience, may be seen as a strong fit as the club looks to build long-term stability.

Writer’s View

Shaun Maloney’s potential return to Scottish football with Dundee could offer both parties a timely opportunity. For Maloney, it’s a chance to prove his development as a coach following a rollercoaster period at Wigan. For Dundee, it’s a step toward building a progressive identity with a manager known for his attention to detail and willingness to develop young players.

Though his spells at Hibs and Wigan were brief, the context in both cases was challenging. With a more stable environment and lessons learned, Dundee might just be the right place for Maloney to deliver on his coaching potential.
