Wigan Athletic Reveals Striker Transfer Strategy

Ryan Lowe has stated that he will be looking for a particular type of striker when conducting Wigan Athletic‘s transfer policy.

The Latics are in the market for a new number nine, following the departure of their two highest scorers in League One last season, with Dale Taylor returning to parent club Nottingham Forest this summer, and cashing in on attacking midfielder Thelo Aasgaard in January, with Luton Town signing the Norwegian international.

Lowe Discusses Transfer Tactic

Wigan have already made strides in the market for a new forward, with reports suggesting they are close to striking a deal for Christian Saydee from Portsmouth. Whilst his scoring returns have been far from stellar, it is the kind of player Lowe has wanted to sign.

Speaking to Wigan Today, the former Preston North End boss said that he wanted to sign strikers who have struggled to live up to their potential. He said:

“I work a bit differently. I want strikers that I know can score goals, who are not necessarily scoring goals at the moment.

“We’re not going to just go out there and get a 20-goal-a-season marksman, because they cost a lot of money, millions of pounds.
“And they’re probably not even out there to start with – because they won’t be up for sale, and they won’t be out of contract.
“I like to look a little bit deeper, in terms of the players I’ve worked with before.”

Writers’ View

Whilst it may come with scepticism from Wigan Athletic fans, this has been a very successful strategy for Ryan Lowe across his career. He has signed names like Liam Delap and Cameron Archer during his time at Preston North End, and during their limited loan spells showed the promise that they have since gone on to deliver later in their careers. With Christian Saydee, it seems he is doing the same, but with such limited attacking quality in his current squad, Lowe needs to find a few more players to complement the Portsmouth forward over the summer.
