Wigan Athletic Target Wrexham Duo In Ambitious Swoop

Wigan Athletic are reportedly looking to sign Paul Mullin and Sam Dalby in what would be a significant statement of intent as they prepare for the 2025/26 League One campaign.

Mullin, 29, is expected to leave Wrexham after a difficult season in which he scored just three goals in 26 league appearances. Injuries and a change in role under Phil Parkinson left the striker out of favour, despite his iconic status at the club. Mullin was pivotal in Wrexham’s rise through the National League and League Two, but this summer appears to mark the end of his remarkable journey in North Wales.

Reports suggest Wigan are exploring the possibility of bringing Mullin in on a free transfer, with the forward out of contract and unlikely to be offered fresh terms.

Sam Dalby, meanwhile, is one of eight players confirmed to be leaving Wrexham at the end of June. The 25-year-old spent the 2024/25 season on loan at Dundee United, where he impressed with 15 goals in all competitions. The Scottish outfit are keen to retain Dalby’s services permanently, but Wigan have now emerged as serious contenders for his signature, according to the Daily Record.

Dalby originally joined Wrexham in 2022 and made 91 appearances, scoring 13 times. Despite limited opportunities in the latter stages of his time at the club, his form in Scotland has reignited interest across the UK.

Wider Wrexham Reshuffle

The situation is part of a wider summer reshuffle at Wrexham. Parkinson has already confirmed that the club are open to player sales, with senior strikers Steven Fletcher and Ollie Palmer also potentially heading for the exit. It’s expected to be a transitional window for the Hollywood-backed side, as they reshape their squad in search of another promotion push.

“I think there’s a real understanding that change is necessary,” Parkinson recently said. “We’ve had some fantastic times, but we need to build again—smarter, leaner, and with the right balance across the pitch.”

Wigan, who finished 12th in League One last season, are looking to strengthen their forward options ahead of a potential promotion bid. Manager Shaun Maloney is thought to be keen on adding experience and firepower, and both Mullin and Dalby fit the bill.

Writer’s View

This possible double swoop signals Wigan’s growing ambition under Shaun Maloney. Paul Mullin might not have hit his previous heights last season, but his pedigree at this level is proven. Sam Dalby, fresh from a strong loan spell in Scotland, looks ready to relaunch his EFL career.

If Wigan can get both deals over the line, they will not only improve their forward line, but also strike a psychological blow to a direct rival in Wrexham—who now face a key rebuilding summer.
