Dundee United manager Jim Goodwin has expressed his desire to secure a permanent deal for Wrexham loanee Sam Dalby.
The striker, who joined Dundee United on transfer deadline day, has been in scintillating form, scoring five goals in his last six matches, including a strike against Rangers at Ibrox.
Dalby Impresses in Scotland
Dalby’s move to Dundee United marked the end of a challenging spell at Wrexham, where he struggled to secure regular playing time under Phil Parkinson. With his Wrexham contract set to expire in the summer, the forward has used his loan stint in Scotland to showcase his potential, becoming a key figure in Goodwin’s side.
“Sam is a player that we really like, and we would love to enter into negotiations about extending his time here at United because he’s coming out of contract at Wrexham in the summer. He’s loving it here, and the Scottish game really suits him,” Goodwin told The Courier.
Goodwin has already initiated discussions with Dalby’s agent, highlighting the striker’s compatibility with the Scottish game and his positive impact at the club. However, the Dundee United boss is realistic about the challenges of securing Dalby permanently, acknowledging the possibility of interest from other clubs with more financial resources.
“Number nines like that are hard to find these days… I’m not naive enough to think other teams aren’t watching him too,” Goodwin added.
Wrexham’s Plans for Dalby
Dalby’s future at Wrexham remains uncertain. While his impressive form in Scotland could spark interest in a January recall, this appears unlikely. Dalby has indicated his intention to remain with Dundee United until the end of the season, effectively ending his time at Wrexham.
Phil Parkinson’s side are reportedly prioritising the signing of a Championship-level striker in January, with Dalby still far down the pecking order at the STōK Cae Ras. With new additions such as Jon Dadi Bodvarsson already bolstering the squad, Dalby’s role at Wrexham appears redundant.
Writer’s View
Sam Dalby’s resurgence at Dundee United underlines his potential to thrive in the right system. Jim Goodwin’s admiration for the striker is well-founded, but the challenge will be retaining him amidst likely interest from other clubs. For Wrexham, allowing Dalby to move on permanently could benefit all parties, especially if they secure their desired attacking reinforcements in January.
