Striker Plays Down January Return to Wrexham

As Wrexham gear up for the January transfer window, questions loom over their attacking line-up.

With Jon Dadi Bodvarsson’s short-term deal set to expire, Steven Fletcher’s contract ending in the summer, and Paul Mullin struggling for form, Phil Parkinson’s side may need reinforcements.

However, one forward who will not be returning to bolster their ranks is Sam Dalby. Currently thriving on loan at Dundee United, Dalby has made it clear that his focus remains on his loan club, where he has hit a purple patch of form in the Scottish Championship.

Dalby’s Blistering Form

The 24-year-old has scored five goals in his last six appearances for Dundee United, including a memorable strike against Rangers at Ibrox—something even Steven Fletcher never managed during his time in Scotland.

Dalby’s success has sparked speculation about a potential recall to aid Wrexham’s promotion push or even a January sale to capitalise on his form before his contract expires next summer. Yet, Dalby has shut down those rumours, telling The Courier:

“I’m here for the season, and focusing game-by-game on helping the team every time I play.”

Wrexham’s Dilemma

While Dalby’s form could be tempting for Wrexham, it appears his chapter at the club is effectively closed. The striker struggled for opportunities last season, managing just one League Two goal and falling down the pecking order under Phil Parkinson. His loan move to Dundee United has proven to be the right decision for all parties, allowing him to showcase his abilities in a competitive environment.

With his deal expiring in the summer and no signs of a contract extension, Dalby has positioned himself as a desirable target for other clubs. Wrexham fans, however, may prefer to see him continue his remarkable run at Tannadice, where he is flourishing.

Site Opinion

Sam Dalby’s success at Dundee United is a testament to the benefits of regular playing time, and Wrexham’s decision to loan him out has paid dividends for the player’s development. While recalling him in January might provide a short-term boost, it would likely disrupt his momentum and fail to address Wrexham’s need for a striker with proven Championship experience.

Instead, Wrexham should focus on securing their long-term attacking options while allowing Dalby to finish his season in Scotland. His performances have elevated his value and demonstrated that he has a bright future—one that may not be at Wrexham, but has been undeniably shaped by his time there.
