Former Luton Town manager Rob Edwards is set to be named as Michael Carrick’s successor at Middlesbrough, according to the PA news agency.
The 42-year-old has been out of work since departing Kenilworth Road in January, leaving the club after just over two years. His time in charge of the Hatters produced the highest of highs and lowest of lows, starting with winning promotion to the Premier League in 2023.
It was the first time Luton had played top flight football since 1992 when they missed out in a place in the inaugural Premier League campaign following relegation from the old Division 1. Although their stay was a brief one, Edwards’ team earned many admirers thanks to their attacking brand of football which saw them score 52 goals in 38 games.
They started last season as one of the favourites to challenge for the Championship title but suffered a giant hangover to become embroiled in a second successive relegation scrap. This cost Edwards his job, where he was replaced by Wycombe Wanderers boss Matt Bloomfield.
Edwards On Verge Of Middlesbrough Job
Middlesbrough opted to end Michael Carrick’s stay at the Riverside Stadium earlier this month after their failure to reach the play-offs. Edwards was immediately installed as one of the favourites to succeed the former Manchester United and England midfielder, although they faced competition from division rivals Bristol City.
The Robins were also on the hunt for a new head coach following Liam Manning’s decision to join Norwich City and held talks with the ex-Watford boss. However, it now appears as if a move to Teesside is on the cards.
Rob Edwards is in advanced talks to become the new #boro head coach. He has beaten off competition from Steve Cooper and Danny Rohl who were also on Middlesbrough’s shortlist. Deal could be completed quite quickly from here.

It is claimed that advanced talks are now taking place and Boro are close to confirming the appointment. Steve Cooper and Danny Rohl were also linked to the position.
Writer’s View
There’s little doubt that Rob Edwards’ time at Luton ended poorly, but he is still considered a hero at Kenilworth Road. Although the Hatters will now play in League One, their former manager’s reputation appears to be untarnished and it’s little surprise that he ended up in a wrangle from two Championship sides hoping to achieve at least a top six finish next season. Middlesbrough will be delighted to have won the race and will feel they have got the right man to steer them over the line. With two promotions on his CV already, few would bet against him.
