Barnet FC have announced the signing of former Huddersfield Town midfielder Scott High, as per the club’s official website.
High’s Career So Far
High has only ever been permanently contracted to one team, Huddersfield Town.
His first games in men’s football came with Concord Rangers during a short loan stint in the National League South in 2019.
The midfielder made his debut for the Terriers aged just 19 in the final game of the 2019/20 Championship season.
The former Scotland under-21 international spent the first half of the following season on loan at Shrewsbury Town in League One. He scored twice in 17 games for the Shrews before being recalled in January and playing 14 games for the Terriers in the second half of the campaign, though most of them came from the bench.
High spent the entirety of the 2021/22 season in Yorkshire as a rotation option for Huddersfield, making 23 league appearances at the John Smith’s Stadium.
The following campaign saw the Dewsbury-born man spend the first half of the season with Rotherham United. Unfortunately, his loan was terminated in January as High could not break into the Milers’ first team.
The last two seasons have seen the midfielder spend time on loan at Ross County, Dundalk and, most recently, FC Halifax Town. High impressed at the Shay, making 21 appearances and scoring two goals as Chris Millington’s side reached the playoffs.
Where Will He Fit In At Barnet?
Despite the signing of Emmanuel Osadebe earlier in the summer, the Bees were still lacking depth in central midfield. This is the position that High will slot into perfectly.
Dean Brennan’s side only had Anthony Hartigan, Mark Shelton and Osadebe as potential options in the two deep-lying midfield roles which they use. This would have provided nowhere near enough depth to cope with the relentless League Two fixture schedule.
Upon signing for Barnet, High said:
“I thought Dean and the staff showed quite lot of love towards me… so it was a no-brainer in the end.
“The league is very tough but the squad that the Gaffer is putting together looks really challenging, so hopefully we can do the best we can and push up that table”.
Writer’s View
Dean Brennan has potentially pulled off another masterstroke in the transfer market by attracting High.
The 24-year-old already has 60 appearances in the Championship, showing his underlying talent and quality.
He is a similar type of player to former Barnet captain Dale Gorman in some respects. High is not afraid to get stuck into a tackle, yet he is technically brilliant and has a good amount of finesse to his game.
The former Halifax Town man completely outperforms Gorman in terms of physicality. He has an excellent work rate and good stamina that allows him to go from box to box for 90 minutes.
