Birmingham City‘s pursuit of Ben Davies has reignited after weeks of silence.
The Blues have been actively looking at new centre-back options across the summer, with the former Sheffield United player being the key target for the League One champions after a successful loan move. Other players, like Teden Mengi from Luton Town and Harry Darling in the midst of his contract standoff with Swansea City, although he ended up joining Norwich City.
Davies Negotiations Continue
According to a report from BirminghamWorld, Chris Davies’ side have been in talks with Rangers over signing the defender on a permanent basis. The former Liverpool centre-back’s contract at Ibrox runs out next summer, meaning City could claim a bargain price to secure their man.
Whilst he was a key starter for Blues across their record-breaking campaign, it is believed that Davies will not be a starter as they head into the Championship after the confirmation of the signing of German Phil Neumann from Hannover 96.
However, no decision is expected immediately, with new boss Russell Martin wanting to examine how the Englishman performs in Rangers’ pre-season.
Writers’ View
It was always reported that Ben Davies was the player Birmingham City were after in this window and despite other links across the past month, Blues have held firm in their interest. A trusted figure for Chris Davies across last season, he is arguably the best option he can pick out of all the names linked to be a rotation option rather than a starter. However, it may be scuppered by Rangers’ choice to keep him for pre-season and could force other options to be considered. However, considering the price, Birmingham should wait before tabling their offer. This hold up will also allow City to target other positions on the pitch, including central midfield where they are examining former loanee Kieran Dowell and Japanese international Kanya Fujimoto.
