Birmingham City are one of many sides targeting Luton Town‘s Teden Mengi as they begin their Championship preparation.
The Blues returned to the second tier at the first time of asking, breaking multiple EFL records in the most dominant League One season ever seen. However, Chris Davies’ side are not sitting idly by and are targeting new players for the upcoming season.
Mengi Wanted By Blues
According to football journalist Graeme Bailey in EFL Analysis, The Hatters’ Teden Mengi is a player of interest for Birmingham, but The Blues are facing competition from multiple other clubs. City have been in the market for a defender, and have tried to sign former loanee Ben Davies from Rangers, but the interest has since died down in recent weeks.
Mengi joined Luton in 2023 and was a standout defender in their Premier League campaign despite their relegation, but injuries limited his time last season to just 20 appearances at Kenilworth Road as the Bedfordshire club was relegated once more into League One. The 23-year-old has a previous history with Birmingham, having played 10 times for the club on loan from Manchester United in 2022.
However, City are not the only club looking at Mengi, with Middlesbrough and two promoted Premier League sides in Sunderland and Burnley, interested. Scott Parker’s side, who lost the Championship title on goal difference, have lost defender CJ Egan-Riley to French side Strasbourg and are looking for partners for Maxime Esteve.

Writers’ View
With Luton Town now in League One, players are looking to move on. Thelo Aasgaard is probably the best example of this after he was told to move by his international manager or face missing out on the Norwegian national team. Teden Mengi was a good player for Town in the Premier League and interest from the division has reemerged with Burnley and Sunderland. Whilst Birmingham is arguably the most ambitious of all the potential projects, and he has past links with the club, The Blues would not be able to offer him the level of football he would want to play at right now. Burnley seems like the most logical destination, with a spot opening up in the starting eleven following CJ Egan-Riley’s departure.
