Luton Town Star Hit With Major International Blow

Thelo Aasgaard has been told that it will be ‘difficult’ for him to play for Norway if he remains at Luton Town.

The 23-year-old joined The Hatters in January from Wigan Athletic as they battled relegation, and ultimately came up short on the final day of the season against West Bromwich Albion.

National Team Boss Makes Position Clear

With Town now back in League One, Norway’s national team boss Ståle Solbakken has spoken out on whether Aasgaard will still be considered for international duties. He said to Nettavisen Sport (Quotes via Luton Today):

“It was a calculated risk. Luton were in a difficult situation when Thelo changed clubs, but it goes without saying that it is difficult to play for the national team if you play in League One. He knows this.

“There are many leagues he can play in. He is a versatile midfielder with good qualities both offensively and defensively. He is one of many players who are in the water crust. He has made his debut, and did well there. He has been on the U-national team for several years, so Thelo is not a player we have only become aware of now.”

Aasgaard was in Norway’s senior squad during the March international break, and scored on debut against Moldova as part of their World Cup qualifying campaign.

Writers’ View

Just under half a year after joining Luton Town, Thelo Aasgaard has been put in a very difficult situation. His past two seasons at Wigan were his best in his career so far, but he failed to make any Norwegian international squads, and finally got the nod upon his move to Bedfordshire this January. The Hatters and Matt Bloomfield will not want to lose an asset they invested so heavily in less than 12 months ago, especially at a reduced price, should a relegation clause have been inserted into his contract. Ultimately, it is up to Aasgaard on whether he values his international future enough to force some sort of move to remain in his national team’s plans.
