Luton Town are already plotting a League One rebuild after suffering back-to-back relegations.
Chairman David Wilkinson has pledged to revive the club’s fortunes following a gut-wrenching drop on the final day of the Championship season.
Wilkinson addresses fans as rebuild begins
Following Saturday’s dramatic 5-3 defeat at West Brom, which consigned Luton to third-tier football for the first time since 2019, Wilkinson issued a candid statement acknowledging mistakes both on and off the pitch. The club finished level on points with Hull City but were relegated on goal difference.
In a message posted on the club’s website, Wilkinson expressed deep regret over how the season ended but was quick to assure supporters that preparations for a bounce back were already underway. The chairman stopped short of blaming head coach Matt Bloomfield, who took over from Rob Edwards in January, instead signalling trust in the current managerial team to oversee the transition.
“Lengthy discussions have already taken place with Matt and his staff regarding next season designed to reshape our squad into a proper Luton team we can all be proud to watch.”
He admitted the club’s leadership must take its share of the blame for the outcome, adding: “We are all accountable and recognise that errors have been made off the pitch, just as they have been on it. We are truly sorry the season has finished as it has.”
Wilkinson stressed that early analysis had already begun before the final whistle of the campaign, suggesting Luton aim to return quickly to the spirit and style that helped them reach the Premier League just two years ago.
“All we can promise, at this moment, is that we will review, regroup and rebuild. We must recover the spirit that was so familiar to us on our rise, and we will use this now as a catalyst for a renewed determination and focus to achieve one objective.”

Writer’s view
Luton’s rapid fall from the Premier League to League One in just two seasons is a cautionary tale, but not a death sentence. The leadership’s willingness to accept blame and act swiftly is encouraging.
Stability under Matt Bloomfield and the return of a squad built around club identity will be key. If the Hatters can harness their hurt and learn quickly, a genuine promotion challenge could be on the cards as early as next season.
