Harrogate Town are hoping to pull off a remarkable coup with the signing of veteran defender Tom Lees.
The Sulphurites are reportedly offering a record-breaking deal to land the former Leeds United and Sheffield Wednesday centre-back.
Harrogate Target Yorkshire Veteran Tom Lees After Huddersfield Exit
According to journalist Alan Nixon, Harrogate have tabled what is believed to be a record offer in a bid to convince the 34-year-old to remain in Yorkshire. The move would represent a significant statement from Simon Weaver’s side, who have steadily consolidated their Football League status since gaining promotion in 2020.
Lees, a product of the Leeds United academy, made 135 senior appearances for the Whites before moving to Sheffield Wednesday in 2014. He went on to make over 270 appearances for the Owls, becoming a mainstay in their defence during a period in which they regularly challenged for Championship promotion.
In 2021, he joined Huddersfield Town, where he added a further 155 appearances across three seasons. His time with the Terriers came to an end this summer, but he leaves with his reputation intact — widely admired for his consistency, leadership and professionalism.
Lees’ experience could be transformational for Harrogate. A player with over 500 Championship appearances under his belt, he has been praised throughout his career for his work ethic and influence in the dressing room. Speaking earlier this year, then-Huddersfield boss Michael Duff hailed Lees’ example-setting attitude:
“There’s different types of leaders. Watching Leesy in training and warm-ups, he does everything perfectly and he is in the gym and never cuts corners. It’s another way of leading… You don’t play at that level and his age without being a good professional.”
Duff also revealed that the team’s defensive stability often correlated with Lees’ presence on the pitch — a testament to his continued value even in the later stages of his career.

Writer’s View
This would be an enormous signing for Harrogate Town — arguably their biggest ever. Tom Lees not only brings pedigree, but also a wealth of knowledge from playing at the highest levels outside the Premier League. He has never strayed far from Yorkshire in his professional journey, and a move to Harrogate would allow him to continue that trend.
Simon Weaver’s side are building something quietly impressive in League Two, and adding someone of Lees’ stature could galvanise the squad both on and off the pitch. If the financial package truly is a club record, it shows a clear statement of intent. Whether they can land him remains to be seen, but the ambition alone speaks volumes about where Harrogate want to go.
