League One winners Birmingham City have agreed a deal to sign Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Tommy Doyle on loan, as per Football League World.
Tommy Doyle Set To Move To St. Andrew’s
Football League World report that the Midlands-based side, who are part-owned by Tom Brady, have staved off competition from Ryan Reynolds’ and Rob McElhenney’s Wrexham as well as Sunderland, who have just been promoted to the Premier League.
The deal is set to be a one-year loan with an option to buy the midfielder in the summer of 2026. If the Blues’ ambitious project goes to plan, this could see Doyle making a return to the Premier League in two years.
Doyle’s Career So Far
Doyle was born in Manchester and he is the grandson of Manchester City legends Glynn Pardoe and Mike Doyle.
He came through the Cityzens’ youth set-up and made his first team debut for Pep Guardiola’s men in the 2019/20 season.
After seven appearances for the Sky Blues across the 19/20 and 2020/21 campaigns, the midfielder joined German side Hamburg on loan in August 2021.
His move to Europe did not really go to plan as he made just seven appearances and scored one goal for the German second-tier outfit before his loan was ended.
Doyle spent the second half of the season on loan at Cardiff City in the Championship. Manager Steve Morison instantly praised his ‘quality’, both in possession and from set pieces. He made 20 appearances for the Bluebirds, scoring twice and providing three assists as they fought off relegation.
The 2022/23 season saw the Englishman head to Sheffield United on loan. Once again, Doyle thrived and, alongside fellow City loanee James McAtee, played an instrumental part in the Blades’ promotion to the Premier League and run to the FA Cup semi-final. He ended the season with four goals and six assists for the Yorkshire giants.
The 23-year-old has spent the last two seasons with Wolverhampton Wanderers, making 50 appearances for the Premier League side. However, he has seen virtually no action since the appointment of Vitor Pereira.
Writer’s View
This transfer is another real coup for Birmingham City, who are once again showing their ambition in the transfer market.
Doyle has immense quality on the ball and should be capable of dictating games week in, week out in the Championship and he should be able to form an excellent partnership with Tomoki Iwata in the centre of the pitch.
From a Wolves perspective, it makes sense to get rid of a player who the manager clearly does not trust. Given their recent PSR troubles, it is imperative that they set Doyle’s option to buy at a good price.
