Sheffield United Target 12-Goal Championship Striker

Blackburn Rovers and Sheffield United are in talks to sign free agent following his release from Preston North End.

The 27-year-old striker is attracting strong interest from both Championship sides after scoring 12 goals last season. According to SportsBoom, the Danish international is one of the hottest names on the free transfer market this summer.

Stoke City and Coventry City are also reportedly monitoring the situation, but Rovers and the Blades have moved quickly in an attempt to secure Riis’ signature. His sudden release from Deepdale has raised eyebrows, especially after a strong campaign in which he helped the Lilywhites narrowly avoid relegation.

Riis Release Sparks Transfer Scramble

Riis joined Preston from Danish side Randers in October 2020 and went on to score 46 goals in 186 appearances for the club. His second season in the Championship was particularly prolific, yielding 16 goals, but his output dipped in the following two campaigns. A return to form in 2024/25 saw him finish as the club’s top scorer, yet Preston opted not to extend his stay.

The striker now finds himself in high demand, with both Blackburn and Sheffield United eager to reinforce their attacking options. With Rovers undergoing a summer rebuild and the Blades targeting an immediate return to the top flight, Riis fits the profile of an experienced and affordable centre-forward.

Despite his importance last season, Preston appear to be clearing the decks under new boss Paul Heckingbottom. Midfielder Ryan Ledson has already joined Huddersfield Town, while goalkeeper Freddie Woodman is being linked with a surprise move to Manchester United. Defender Patrick Bauer also departed after a six-year stint but remains without a new club.

Riis, who has been capped five times by Denmark, is keen to resolve his future quickly and join a new side in time for pre-season. His physical style, Championship pedigree, and eye for goal make him a prime target for clubs looking to add proven firepower without incurring a transfer fee.

Writer’s View

Emil Riis being available on a free is a major opportunity for clubs with promotion ambitions. Blackburn and Sheffield United both need a reliable goalscorer, and the Dane’s proven record in the Championship makes him a smart option.

His release from Preston may be a gamble by Heckingbottom, but for the clubs circling, it could prove to be a gift. Riis won’t be short of offers, but a move to either Ewood Park or Bramall Lane would represent a strong fit for player and club alike.
