Cardiff City Handed Major Takeover Boost

The end of Vincent Tan’s ownership of Cardiff City may be in sight after Gareth Bale confirmed he was in a group looking to take over the club.

Wales’ all-time top scorer and five-time Champions League winner has been in the headlines recently as he has been involved in a consortium looking to invest in English football. Whilst initial reports linked the group to Plymouth Argyle, it has since emerged that Cardiff is the target as the hometown club of the 35-year-old winger.

Bale Confirms Rumours

WalesOnline reported last week that Bale’s group had submitted a bid to current Cardiff owner Vincent Tan, which was then promptly rejected by the Malaysian businessman. Now, in interviews on the red carpet for F1: The Movie, Bale has opened up on the links to City. Speaking to TalkSPORT about the potential Plymouth links, he said:

“I have no idea where Plymouth came from to be honest with you.

“It’s always been Cardiff that we’re trying to get and being from Cardiff I’m very passionate, I see how passionate the Wales and Cardiff fans are.

“It’s an interesting time, an exciting time, and hopefully something can be done.”

Writers’ View

Vincent Tan has been a very polarising figure during his tenure in charge of Cardiff City, so to see someone so invested in the club and the local community wanting to buy the club is a major source of optimism. Most famously, Tan briefly changed the kit colours of the club and badge during the early years of his ownership, and has wanted to sell part of his stock as far back as 2017. Gareth Bale is a local lad who can attract many investors to The Bluebirds and help them out of their rut after a disappointing relegation to League One. Of course, Tan has already rejected one bid, so he may not be willing to let his ownership share go away so easily, meaning this may be a drawn-out process for Bale and his group.
