Coventry City have been handed a big blow as their pre-season looms as Haji Wright has been ruled out of international duty due to injury.
The Sky Blues’ talisman was in the United States’ squad for the Gold Cup and made his first appearance of the tournament in their 5-0 demolition of Trinidad and Tobago, where the 27-year-old scored. The US are currently top of their group and is the current favourite to claim the CONCACAF title, which they last won in 2021.
Wright Sent Home
According to the United States Men’s National Team, managed by Mauricio Pochettino, and later covered by Coventry Live, Wright has been sent back to the West Midlands to assess and resolve an issue with his left Achilles, which has ruled him out for the rest of the Gold Cup.
Frank Lampard’s side are due back in training for pre-season at the start of July, with their first pre-season match coming later in the month. Coventry have yet to make a signing this summer, after releasing eight players from across the club, one of which was the departing Jamie Paterson to join Plymouth Argyle.
Wright missed a large chunk of last season with an ankle injury, missing 25 games for both club and country between November and February. Nevertheless, he ended as The Sky Blues’ top scorer with 12 goals as they narrowly missed out on a playoff final appearance, losing to eventual winners Sunderland in heartbreaking fashion.

Losing Haji Wright as you begin your pre-season training is very unfortunate for Coventry City. Whilst he certainly will have been on a different plan compared to his teammates due to his involvement with the United States, this is a major setback for Frank Lampard. If this injury lasts for more than a few weeks before he can fully recover, it will have a big effect on the 27-year-old’s fitness heading into the first Championship games at the start of August.
