Exclusive: Former Sunderland Defender To Pen Non-League Deal

Morgan Feeney will complete a return to Carlisle United, this summer, according to sources close to The Real EFL.

The 26-year-old former Sunderland defender was a key figure during Carlisle’s 2022/23 promotion campaign and is now set to play a pivotal role in their National League recovery under manager Mark Hughes.

Feeney, who began his senior career at Everton, enjoyed a brief spell at Sunderland during the 2020/21 season. He made his debut in emphatic fashion, scoring in an 8–1 EFL Trophy win over Aston Villa U21s, but injuries limited his impact at the Stadium of Light. After his departure from Wearside, he joined Carlisle United and went on to make over 100 appearances during his first stint, earning the captain’s armband and helping the club back into League One.

His time at Shrewsbury was short-lived, and following his release this summer, Carlisle are poised to act swiftly to secure his return. The club finished second-bottom in League Two last season and will now compete in the National League, where Feeney’s leadership and familiarity with the environment are seen as crucial assets.

It’s believed a deal could be done as early as tomorrow, as the ambitious Cumbrians target a Football League return. They’ll be hoping for an immediate return, a carbon copy of the 2004/05 season. Back then, they finished 23rd in League Two and were relegated, but came straight back the following season.

In 2005/06, they were promoted again to League One, sparking an eight-season stay in the third-tier, and a play-off defeat for a place in the Championship.

Writer’s View

This is a smart move for Carlisle United. Morgan Feeney’s previous success at Brunton Park makes him an ideal figure to spearhead their response to relegation. He knows the club, the expectations, and the pressure of fighting for promotion at this level. Having captained the side to a memorable play-off win over Stockport just two years ago, Feeney brings not only defensive solidity but also crucial leadership qualities at a time when stability is paramount.

While his spell at Sunderland may have been brief, his journey through the EFL continues to show resilience and maturity. Reuniting with a familiar setup under Mark Hughes could prove vital in helping Carlisle steady the ship after a tough season.
