League Two side Notts County have completed the loan signing of Huddersfield Town midfielder Tom Iorpenda.
The 20-year-old joins on a season-long loan and will join Matthew Dennis as another player to complete an early move to Meadow Lane.
The Magpies are currently managerless after parting ways with former manager Stuart Maynard after a failed play-off campaign in May.
A Promising Young Talent
After signing a new four-year deal with the Terriers, Iorpenda will drop down a division for more playing time. After the success of former loanee George Abbott, Notts County will be hoping to replicate the same success with Iorpenda.
Despite a back injury affecting his campaign last season, the 20-year-old has made 15 first-team appearances for Huddersfield, including two in the Championship, and five in League One. Iorpenda has also experienced a taste in men’s football with a short loan spell at non-league side Hyde United back in 2023.
Speaking to the club website, head of football at Notts County, Roberto Gagliardi, was full of praise for the 20-year-old, saying:
“He is an athletic, box-to-box midfielder with sound technique and excellent pedigree, having come through Brighton and Huddersfield’s academies.
“He has all the qualities you look for in a modern-day, dynamic midfielder, and we’re excited to work with him to help us achieve our objectives.
“We’re pleased to offer another highly promising young player a fantastic platform to show what they can do.”
Notts County’s Summer Rebuild
After being in and around the promotion picture in League Two all season, Maynard and his side fell short to eventual play-off winners AFC Wimbledon in the semi-finals.
As a result, eight players have departed Meadow Lane after their contracts with the club expired, according to their retained list, with one further player mutually terminating his contract. Two loanees also ended their temporary stay at the club, returning to their parent clubs respectively. This means that 19 first-team players remain under contract.
As of the time of writing this, the Magpies are yet to appoint a new manager, but this doesn’t appear to be hindering their transfer plans, with Iorpenda being their second signing of the summer.
If the club are going to go one step further next season, this summer will be a busy one and one they need to get right if they want to return to League One after 10 years away.
Writer’s View
The transfer business that Notts County have done so far has been solid, but the fact that they are yet to hire a manager is an area of worry. The side will be gunning for League Two promotion, but they need to hire a manager and prepare as soon as possible to give them the best possible chance at promotion.
A move down a division for Iorpenda makes perfect sense for all parties involved. The player will be able to get more first-team game time, whilst Notts County will be hoping to replicate the success they had with a loanee last season.
