AFC Wimbledon Bid Farewell To Club Legend

AFC Wimbledon have confirmed their retained list following promotion from League Two, with club stalwart Will Nightingale among those set to depart.

Several key players have been offered new deals while a number of influential figures from the club’s promotion-winning squad are moving on. The club, fresh from promotion, are preparing for a busy summer of change, with experienced names like Nightingale, James Ball and John-Joe O’Toole all confirmed to be leaving the Cherry Red Records Stadium.

Exceptional Human Being

Director of Football Craig Cope paid tribute to those departing, many of whom played crucial roles in what he described as a promotion campaign “three years in the making.” Nightingale, who has been with the club since childhood, will be honoured with a testimonial this weekend, marking the end of a significant era.

“Finally to Will Nightingale, an exceptional human being who has been a brilliant player for this club. I am looking forward to celebrating his testimonial with everyone on Sunday,” said Cope.

Ryan Johnson, James Tilley and Josh Neufville have been offered new contracts, while veterans Sam Hutchinson and Marcus Browne remain in discussions over potential extensions. Meanwhile, the club has exercised an option to retain defender Isaac Ogundere.

Loan Players

Among the loan players returning to their parent clubs are Joe Pigott, James Furlong, Owen Goodman and Alistair Smith. Pigott, a familiar face at Plough Lane, made a meaningful impact with crucial goals during the second half of the season. Goodman, meanwhile, ends his loan as arguably the best goalkeeper in League Two, earning an England U21 call-up after conceding just 35 goals in 49 games.

“Joe Pigott returned with some crucial goals away at Cheltenham and Barrow… Owen Goodman came across South London to become the best goalkeeper in the league,” Cope added.

The full list of players under contract includes Omar Bugiel, Josh Kelly, Callum Maycock, Jake Reeves, Myles Hippolyte, and Ethan Sutcliffe, among others. With a strong core retained and clarity over exits, the Dons look well-positioned to begin shaping their squad for the challenge of League One.

Writer’s View

Wimbledon’s retained list strikes a smart balance between sentiment and pragmatism. Saying goodbye to players like Will Nightingale will be emotional for fans, but the club’s ambition to build for the future is clear.

With solid pieces in place and new contracts offered to key contributors, the Dons appear ready to face the next level head-on. Their success in the loan market last season should also give fans confidence that further smart recruitment lies ahead.
