Swansea City Make Move To Appoint Permanent Boss

Swansea City are beginning talks to appoint interim boss Alan Sheehan as their next permanent manager.

The Irish coach, who has been at the club since 2023 during the tenure of Michael Duff, was put in interim charge in South Wales after The Jacks sacked Luke Williams in February, and agreed to lead the club for the rest of the campaign after a positive start.

Swans Set To Appoint Sheehan

According to BBC Sport, City have begun talks with the former Bradford City and Leeds United midfielder to take the job on a permanent basis. The club believes that these talks can reach a positive outcome before their final game of the season against Oxford United.

Sheehan led the club away from the Championship relegation zone with a superb run of games with seven wins and two draws out of eleven matches. They still have the faintest of chances of reaching the playoffs, but require a remarkable set of events in order to sneak into the top six.

Sheehan had previously revealed his interest in taking on the role full-time and was put alongside Hammarby manager Kim Hellberg as the leading candidates to be appointed by the club, but WalesOnline has reported that the Swedish boss was unlikely to leave his role.

This feels like a fairly obvious decision for Swansea City to make. Alan Sheehan has got the support of the fans and players, with goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux saying that the Irishman deserves to have this role. There will always be an err on the side of caution as we have seen in the past, appointing interim managers permanently can fail to deliver after signing their contract, perhaps best seen this season with Omer Riza at Cardiff City. The benefit that Sheehan has is that he will have a full summer to build and reshape the squad to how he sees fit, and with new investment in the form of Luka Modric now behind him, Swansea could be contenders to reach the playoffs for the first time since Steve Cooper five years ago.
