Norwich City’s South American Imports: Samba Soccer Norfolk Style

Norwich City has had a handful of South American players over the years, with varying degrees of success.

As the club expresses interest in signing Luis Fernando Carrero, a promising young talent from South America, it’s worth noting that he wouldn’t be the first South American to wear the yellow and green.

While some left a lasting legacy at Carrow Road, others had forgettable spells.

Emiliano Buendía: Norwich’s Star Import

Emiliano Buendía is undoubtedly the most successful South American to play for Norwich City. The Argentine attacking midfielder joined Norwich from Spanish side Getafe in 2018. His impact was immediate, as he became a creative force in Daniel Farke’s side, helping the Canaries secure promotion to the Premier League in his debut season. Buendía’s ability to unlock defences and provide crucial assists made him a fan favourite, and he was equally influential during Norwich’s 2020–21 Championship-winning campaign, where he was named the Championship Player of the Season.

After scoring 15 goals and providing 16 assists that season, Buendía earned a high-profile move to Aston Villa in the summer of 2021. Although his time at Norwich was relatively short, his influence was undeniable, and he remains one of the most memorable South American players to have graced Carrow Road.

Gabriel Sara: A Brazilian Talent in Norfolk

Gabriel Sara joined Norwich City from São Paulo in 2022, bringing with him a reputation for creativity and technical skill. The Brazilian midfielder made his debut for Norwich on August 6, 2022, and gradually became an important player in the squad. His ability to control the tempo of the game and contribute with goals and assists made him a valuable asset for the Canaries.

Before arriving in England, Sara had established himself as a promising talent in Brazil, and his transition to English football has been largely positive.

Marcelino Núñez: Chilean Midfield Dynamism

Marcelino Núñez arrived at Carrow Road in 2023 from Universidad Católica in Chile, where he had gained valuable experience in the Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana. Núñez quickly adapted to English football, bringing energy and composure to Norwich’s midfield. His ability to dictate play and contribute in both attack and defence has made him an exciting addition to the squad.

Onel Hernández: A Historic Trailblazer

Onel Hernández made history when he joined Norwich City in January 2018, becoming the first Cuban to play and score in the Premier League. His pace, directness, and attacking threat provided a new dimension to Norwich’s attack. Hernández was instrumental in helping Norwich secure promotion to the Premier League in 2019 and continued to play an important role in the squad over the following seasons.

Looking Ahead: Luis Fernando Carrero

With Norwich reportedly interested in signing Luis Fernando Carrero, there is growing excitement among the fans. Carrero, a young Colombian midfielder, has the potential to follow in the footsteps of Buendía and Sara by making a strong impact at Carrow Road. His technical skills and attacking flair could provide Norwich with another exciting South American star to cheer for in the seasons to come.
