Burnley manager Scott Parker has confirmed that discussions are ongoing regarding new contracts for CJ Egan-Riley and Josh Brownhill, following Connor Roberts’ decision to extend his stay at Turf Moor.
Roberts’ turnaround sparks contract questions
Roberts’ future had been uncertain, with his contract set to expire at the end of the season. However, in a surprise move, the Welshman has signed a two-year deal with the option of a third, securing his long-term future at the club.
The 29-year-old, who was frozen out under Vincent Kompany and loaned to Leeds United last season, has been a key figure in Burnley’s campaign, making 39 appearances and scoring twice.
“It’s a massive positive. I’m delighted that we’ve managed to secure Connor,” Parker said. “He’s been pivotal this year. In fact, I think he’s been pivotal for this football club for some time now.”

Connor Roberts Career
Connor Roberts joined Swansea City’s academy at 9. After progressing through the ranks, he signed his first pro deal in 2015. Loan spells at Yeovil and Bristol Rovers followed before making his Swansea debut in 2018.
He later moved to Burnley in 2021, and after a loan spell at Leeds United in 2024, he’s set to return to Burnley. Roberts has won numerous awards, including Swansea City’s Player of the Year for 2020–21 and a spot in the 2022–23 EFL Championship Team of the Season.
Talks continue for Egan-Riley and Brownhill
With Roberts’ situation resolved, attention has turned to Egan-Riley and Brownhill, who are also set to be out of contract this summer. However, Parker admitted that negotiations remain ongoing, with no immediate resolution in sight.
“Not at the moment, no, not at the moment,” Parker said when asked about their contract situations. They’re still ongoing conversations that we’re having. Obviously, in-season it’s pretty difficult, certainly with where we are currently as well in terms of what we have to do and the sole focus being on that.”
With Burnley locked in a promotion battle, Parker stressed that securing results remains the priority, but he hopes to tie both players down to new deals soon.
Writer’s view
While Roberts’ extension is a boost for Burnley, uncertainty remains around two important squad members. Brownhill, in particular, has been a key player in midfield, and losing him on a free transfer would be a significant blow.
The club must strike a balance between focusing on their promotion push and securing the long-term future of their squad. If negotiations drag on, interest from other clubs could complicate matters, making it crucial for Burnley to act decisively.
