Notts County Boss Frustrated Following Promotion Setback

Stuart Maynard has said that “any loss is damaging” as Notts County faced a setback in their promotion chase.

The Magpies were brought down by a Barrow side that had only won twice on the road all season, denting their hopes for an automatic promotion spot but having their blushes spared by other teams around them having similarly woeful nights.

Maynard Disappointed By Performance

Speaking to BBC Radio Nottingham following the result at Meadow Lane, former Wealdstone boss Maynard was frustrated by the setback.

“The emotions are high. In both boxes we have come up short.

“I think any loss is damaging. Every time we go onto the pitch we want to get all three points, especially at home we want to win every game we play in.

“There are still enough points left out there to get to where we want to get.

“I know we will bounce back. We have got a group whose mentality and attitude is to give everything.”

They face a crunch match for promotion this weekend as they travel to face AFC Wimbledon in one of League Two’s early kickoffs, with both sides having a game in hand on all three automatic promotion placeholders.

Writer’s View

With the added context of everyone in the top eight bar Bradford City dropping points, it is not a terrible night for Notts County but definitely a missed opportunity to gain ground on Doncaster Rovers. The game against AFC Wimbledon now becomes a must-win game for either side as a loss could spell the end of their automatic promotion hopes. With Bradford and Walsall now having a comfortable margin between them and the chasing pack, it now boils down to who will claim the third automatic promotion spot and avoid the lottery of playoff football this May. Anyone from third all the way down to Bromley in ninth have a shot, so any potential side need to be a cut above the rest to get into League One.
