Charlton Athletic Star Makes Admission Amid Preston North End Links

Thierry Small has said he would love to stay at Charlton Athletic as negotiations surrounding his future continue.

His contract at The Valley expires at the end of this season after joining at the end of the last January transfer window. He has played 43 times in total for The Addicks and has become a regular in Nathan Jones’ plans across the festive period on the right-hand side due to an injury for Kayne Ramsey.

Talks Continue As Preston Lurk

Small’s contract stalemate with Charlton has led other clubs to monitor the wing-back, and according to Alan Nixon via his Patreon page, Championship side Preston North End would be interested in a move. However, should The Lilywhites make a move, Charlton would be due a compensation fee as he is under 24 years old.

However, Athletic have been handed somewhat of a boost in their hopes of renewing the former Port Vale man when he spoke to the South London Press. Speaking about the contract situation, he said:

“It’s currently under negotiations and I’m just letting my agent deal with it. We will just see where it goes from there. I would love to stay.”

Writer’s View

Thierry Small has adapted brilliantly to the task of playing on the other side of the pitch over the past two months. He is a very useful asset with his newfound versatility and Charlton would lose that should they let him go. Admitting he would love to stay at the club beyond this season will likely indicate to Preston North End that they will have to move on from their target and can be viewed as a real testament to the club’s stature under Nathan Jones. In a very tightly packed League One play-off picture, The Addicks have held their own and based on their wins over Birmingham City and Wycombe Wanderers can beat the top teams in this side. They certainly have a shot at promotion this season.
