Wycombe Wanderers’ pursuit of a new head coach has hit a snag after Rasmus Bertelsen, the highly-regarded manager of Randers FC, rejected their proposal.
Reports from Tipsbladet revealed last week that the League One side were in advanced talks with the 41-year-old Danish coach, expressing strong interest in bringing him to Adams Park. However, Bertelsen has decided to remain with Randers, who are performing well in the Danish Superliga.
The Chairboys were reportedly keen to appoint Bertelsen and were willing to accommodate his request to include his assistant, Fatah Abdirahman, in the move. Despite days of intense negotiations, the Randers duo ultimately declined the opportunity to take charge of Wycombe’s promotion push, preferring to continue their successful stint in Denmark.
Wycombe’s Search for a New Leader
The news is a blow to Wycombe, as Bertelsen had been their top target to replace former manager Matt Bloomfield. The club’s hierarchy had reportedly gone to great lengths to lure the Danish coach, with substantial offers and a warm approach. Unfortunately for the Chairboys, the allure of staying with a high-performing Randers side proved stronger for Bertelsen and his assistant.
In the meantime, interim manager Sam Grace remains in charge and will oversee Wycombe’s fixture against Barnsley on Tuesday evening. While Grace managed a victory in his first match at Mansfield Town, a lacklustre performance in a 2-0 defeat to Northampton Town has increased pressure on the club to finalise their managerial appointment quickly.

Next Steps for the Chairboys
Despite this setback, Wycombe are expected to continue exploring their options. Sporting director Dan Rice, who has shown a sharp eye for talent in Scandinavia, may look to the region again in search of a suitable replacement. Wycombe have previously benefited from this approach, successfully signing players like Anders Hagelskjaer and Magnus Westergaard.
With the League One side firmly in the promotion race, the timing of Bloomfield’s departure has added complexity to their search. The owners and Rice will need to act swiftly to ensure stability on the pitch while securing the right candidate for the role. Maintaining momentum during the promotion battle is crucial, especially as the competition in League One remains fierce.
Writer’s View
Rasmus Bertelsen’s decision to stay in Denmark highlights the challenge of attracting top coaching talent to League One. While Wycombe’s interest in a high-calibre candidate reflects their ambition, they must now pivot quickly and decisively. Dan Rice’s track record in identifying talent suggests Wycombe can still secure a strong appointment.
