Chesterfield Reveal “Hammer Blow” As Defensive Issues Worsen

Chesterfield have been handed yet more bad news on the injury front as Paul Cook revealed Kyle McFadzean would face a spell on the sidelines.

The veteran defender was only signed by the club this month after he was released from Championship side Blackburn Rovers. He has played twice since arriving in Derbyshire but was forced off of the pitch in their most recent game against Bromley.

Worse Than Initially Feared

McFadzean played 81 minutes against The Ravens before being brought off, with coach Danny Webb initially being optimistic about the injury but still cautious about how serious it would be.

Paul Cook has since revealed ahead of The Spireites’ next game against Cheltenham Town that the 37-year-old is out for a considerable amount of time. He told the Derbyshire Times:

“It is another absolute hammer blow to us if I am honest with you. I think everyone can see the calmness and the quality he has brought to our team. I think he started the game against Port Vale a little shaky, home debut, little nervous, and then the rest of the game-time has been exactly what we thought we would get.

“He is a top player and a top pro and he is going to be a big miss for us now because he was forming part of a new back four so we are going to have to adjust to that. Hopefully he can still be back to help us still.”

Writer’s View

This latest blow for Chesterfield is far from ideal. Kyle McFadzean had looked to have fully adapted to the pace of League Two and was very strong against Bromley prior to the knock. It leaves Paul Cook short yet again at the back with just two fit senior centre backs in Jamie Grimes and Tim Akinola, whilst Tom Naylor can also cover in the position. There is some optimism with the near-returns of Tyrone Williams and Ash Palmer, but both will need time to get back up to full-match fitness. A move in the market could also be possible with the future of Harvey Araujo in the air and set to be decided this week.
