Lincoln City head coach Michael Skubala says the club are looking at ‘one or two young players’ ahead of the end of the transfer window on Monday night.
The Imps have had a relatively quiet month in terms of transfer activity, although have added the experience of Sam Clucas and James Collins to their ranks. The latter was seen as somewhat of a coup, with the 34-year-old well-versed in front of goal at League One level.
It’s been Lincoln’s lack of fire power which has been an issue this season. This was evident over the festive period when they failed to score in four successive league games.
Form had also dropped off. Having been as high as fourth in October, they picked up one win in 12 league outings to drop into mid-table. There was cause for optimism last week when they thumped rivals Peterborough United, although they were back in familiar territory when they lost 2-0 to Blackpool on Tuesday night despite being the better team.
Skubala Explains Late Transfer Plan
Lincoln have been linked with Nottingham Forest attacker Joe Gardner ahead of Monday’s deadline. Speaking before tomorrow’s trip to Wigan Athletic, Skubala revealed that the club are still looking to add cover to their squad:
“We’ve got a little bit going on. We’re looking at one or two young players to come and support.
“I’ve always said that I’m really happy with the group at the moment. If we can get some cover in some places, that’s really important because what we don’t want to do is hit injuries two days after the window closes.
“In the same sense, we don’t just want to bring in anybody and just have numbers in the building.
“The group is really healthy and competitive. We’ve got players that we know are coming back. Tom Hamer is on a good recovery, George Wickens is on the grass today, which is great. So, we’ve got players coming back.
“So when we’re adding and when we’re looking, it’s more to have that cover and balance. Then again, in the last minutes of windows, things can pop up that are for the future as well, and we’re prepared for that.”
Writer’s View
Despite smatterings of discontent amongst some Lincoln supporters, there’s no getting away from the fact that they are consistenly punching above their weight. They’ve got one of the youngest squads in League One, so to add the experience of Clucas and Collins this month was really important. They do have a model of nurturing young talent, so it’s no surprise to see that they’re still on the lookout for players who will benefit them in the future.
