Cheltenham Town Line Up Joel Colwill Replacement

Cheltenham Town look set to sign Bristol City academy midfielder Tommy Backwell less than a week after losing Joel Colwill.

The Cardiff City loanee was recalled by his parent club as they targeted a League One move for the 20-year-old, with Exeter City being the beneficiaries.

Loan Move Agreed

According to Gloucestershire Live, Backwell is set to join Michael Flynn’s side on loan for the remainder of the season, giving him the chance of his first taste of EFL football with The Robins. The attacking midfielder had been on trial with the club for the past week and played in a training ground game.

Cheltenham are making multiple moves in the January transfer window, with three incoming already in the form of Waterford right-back Darragh Power, as well as striker Ashley Hay and defender Val Adedokun, both from Brentford. It is believed that two further signings are to be made in the near-term future for Town.

Attacking midfield has been a key area for many teams in League Two to reinforce this window, with Bradford City signing two in Gillingham‘s George Lapslie and MK Dons‘ Tommy Leigh, with Scott Lindsey’s side moving to sign Notts County‘s Dan Crowley afterwards.

Losing Joel Colwill was a major blow to Cheltenham Town considering his productivity this season for the club. This move for Tommy Backwell is a good move to plug that gap, and can be considered as a similar player to Colwill with his versatility and this being his first major chance of game time in his career. Michael Flynn seems to be happy based on his performance on trial to take this chance, and will be able to develop on loan alongside other players like Ashley Hay from Brentford. Town do look to be in a stable place and not under any risk of relegation this season, which will offer these players a fairly low-pressure situation to adapt to senior football.
