League One side Exeter City pulled off an impressive 3-1 victory over Championship outfit Oxford United at St James Park, securing their spot in the FA Cup fourth round for the first time in 44 years.
Oxford struck first through Matt Phillips in the 14th minute, capitalising on a swift counter-attack. Dane Scarlett’s precise delivery into the box allowed Phillips to finish neatly with his left foot. However, the Grecians responded emphatically, with Demetri Mitchell netting twice before the break to turn the game in Exeter’s favour. Vincent Harper sealed the victory in the second half, capping a historic afternoon for Gary Caldwell’s side.
Oxford’s misery was compounded late on as substitute Tyler Goodrham received a straight red card for violent conduct after an elbow to Jake Richards’ face.
“The opportunity in football like this doesn’t come around often – we spoke in the summer as a group about the opportunity to create history,” Exeter boss Gary Caldwell told BBC Radio Devon. “I thought we were brilliant to go a goal down against a very good team that’s a league above and stick to our principles, stick to our identity.”
Mitchell’s Brilliance Turns the Tide
Oxford began brightly, with Louie Sibley testing Exeter goalkeeper Joe Whitworth in the opening minute. The visitors took the lead shortly after, with Scarlett initiating a slick counter-attack before setting up Phillips for a composed finish.
Exeter, however, refused to be rattled. Mitchell’s stunning volley in the 22nd minute brought the Grecians level and ignited their confidence. Moments later, Harper’s looping header forced a sharp save from Oxford keeper Matt Ingram, hinting at the home side’s growing dominance.
Mitchell struck again in the 40th minute, coolly slotting past Ingram after finding space in the box. The Grecians carried a 2-1 lead into half-time, buoyed by their attacking prowess and energetic play.

Harper and Discipline Cost Oxford Dearly
Oxford’s attempts to rally in the second half were thwarted by Harper’s decisive strike in the 64th minute. Collecting a pass from Callum Watts, Harper fired low into the net, giving Exeter a crucial two-goal cushion.
Goodrham’s red card in the 81st minute further dented Oxford’s hopes. A flailing arm caught Richards, sparking heated exchanges between players at full time. The dismissal means Goodrham will miss Oxford’s critical Championship clash against Plymouth Argyle on Tuesday.
Exeter’s victory ensures they progress in the FA Cup while Oxford suffer their third consecutive third-round exit. The defeat piles further pressure on manager Gary Rowett, whose heavily rotated side failed to match Exeter’s intensity.
Writer’s View
Exeter’s performance exemplified the spirit of the FA Cup. Caldwell’s side showcased resilience, quality, and belief, overcoming an early setback to dominate a higher-league opponent. Mitchell’s clinical finishing and Harper’s energy were key, while Oxford’s disjointed display and lack of discipline proved costly. This result could galvanise Exeter’s season, while Oxford must regroup quickly to avoid slipping further in the Championship.
