Cheltenham Town Face Major Transfer Blow

Cheltenham Town have received a major blow as it has been revealed that Joel Colwill will be recalled by Cardiff City.

The midfielder has been a standout for The Robins since returning to League Two, being their joint-top scorer in the league with six goals and a further three assists. He played a total of of 28 games for Michael Flynn’s side but according to GloucestershireLive, he has now played his last minutes at the club in their New Year’s Day game against Port Vale.

Cardiff Make Loan Decision

The Bluebirds have opted to bring back the 20-year-old to South Wales, with the vision to send him on loan to League One and potentially challenge for a first-team place alongside his brother Rubin following this season.

Flynn had wanted to keep the Welsh Under-21 international at Whaddon Road, but will now have to find a replacement, with GloucestershireLive believing that a new loan signing will be made in this window as well as a few permanent deals.

Cardiff boss Omer Riza had previously spoke of interest from League One surrounding Colwill, telling WalesOnline:

“Currently there’s been a few whispers with regards to players going out on loan.

“Joel, we’ve got interest from League One for him, which I think would be really good for him and would be good for his education.

“There are other players we’ve got interest in… but we have to be patient because we have to make sure we have players in before we let players go out.”

Writer’s View

This is a major blow to Cheltenham Town as he was easily their most impressive player this season with how quick he adapted to League Two in what was his first loan away from Cardiff. He clearly has the potential to go far so getting him some League One experience is essential before perhaps getting the chance to play for his boyhood club, no matter what division they end up in next season.
