Blackburn Rovers Pursue Coventry City Defender

Blackburn Rovers are considering a move for Coventry City centre-back Liam Kitching, according to the Lancashire Telegraph.

John Eustace’s side have suffered a few injury blows in recent weeks, with Harry Pickering being taken out of action with a knee injury against Millwall as well as Hayden Carter’s absence making a new defender to come in the doors at Ewood Park a priority.

Move For Kitching In The Balance

According to the Lancashire Telegraph, Blackburn have been in communication with Coventry for Kitching over the past week and a deal had looked likely at one stage. The move has since become more complex following Frank Lampard’s decision to play the former Leeds United academy graduate in their loss against Norwich City last week.

Kitching has struggled for game time in the West Midlands this year, only playing eight games in the Championship so far and has been an unused substitute for most of this campaign. He joined from Barnsley in 2023 for a fee believed to be in the region of £4 million and has racked up 42 appearances to date in Sky Blue.

It is believed that should a move happen, Kitching would move to Blackburn on a loan deal, due to both Coventry’s financial commitment and an unwillingness for Rovers to spend a similar amount on the player.

The 25-year-old is not the only centre-back linked with a move to Lancashire, with Norwich City’s Grant Hanley also rumoured to be moving north according to Alan Nixon, but that has since been rubbished by the Lancashire Telegraph.

Writer’s View

It would be a very intriguing move to make for Blackburn Rovers. They certainly do need one or two more faces at the back for the remainder of this season and securing Liam Kitching on loan would be a very good short-term fix. The question does remain if he can fully make the step up to the Championship level after not the best of seasons with Coventry. If Rovers can capture the brilliance he displayed with Barnsley though, they will have someone on their hands who can challenge for a first-team place regularly.
