Carlisle United Targeting More New Signings

Carlisle United head coach Mike Williamson says he is hopeful of more signings in ‘the immediate future’ after already enjoying a busy transfer window.

The Cumbrians have endured a miserable first half of the season and are staring down the barrel of a second successive relegation. Currently bottom of League Two, Saturday’s defeat against fellow strugglers Tranmere Rovers now means they are six points from safety.

This has led to Williamson targeting an overhaul of his squad. Although the transfer window opened just last week, there has already been five new arrivals at Brunton Park, with Will Patching, Elliot Embleton, Callum Whelan, Cedwyn Scott and Sean Fusire coming in through the door.

Carlisle Targeting More Signings

Carlisle host MK Dons this weekend in what could be a much-changed lineup. It appears as if this will be a common theme throughout the month, with Williamson confident of more new faces. Speaking to The Carlisle News & Starthe 41-year-old said:

“I don’t really want to speak too soon because I’m hopeful of more happening in the immediate future.

“But football as it is, there’s a lot of clubs looking for talent and players that are in the profile of young, hungry, athletic and with good technical ability. So I don’t want to speak too soon.”

One player linked with the fourth tier outfit is former Sheffield Wednesday and West Bromwich Albion winger Adam Reach, who is a free agent after leaving the Hawthorns last summer. Williamson admits a deal isn’t close although it is one he would love to materialise:

“I’m a big fan and I think his career speaks for himself. He’s a real good pro.

“There is nothing that is happening right now. But he’s certainly somebody that I’d love to have here.”

Writer’s View

Carlisle are in desperation mode right now and are having one final roll of the dice in order to salvage their EFL status. The players they have already brought through the door are excellent additions on paper but with no time to gel, they will need to hit the ground running. More new arrivals could make that even tougher. Williamson’s side are already six points adrift and need to start chipping away at that gap before it widens. A win over former side MK Dons would be an excellent starting point.
