Birmingham City have entered a transfer showdown with a fellow West Midlands club over Rangers full-back Adam Devine.
The 21-year-old has played 11 senior games for the Ibrox club in his career but has failed to register any appearances following a loan spell at fellow Scottish Premiership side Motherwell at the end of last season.
Blues Interested In Devine
According to the Daily Mail and later reported on by BirminghamLive, City are interested in adding the defender to their squad, with his contract in Glasgow expiring at the end of this campaign.
However, they will have their work cut out as previous reports have linked West Bromwich Albion to the player, with Alan Nixon initially breaking that story. With his contract now in its final six months, either side could reach a pre-contract agreement with Devine for the summer.
Blues currently have both Alfons Sampsted and Ethan Laird at their disposal at right-back, but the Icelandic international has failed to play any senior football since representing his nation in November. West Brom meanwhile have the ever-reliable Darnell Furlong as a regular starter but are lacking in depth, with youngster Deago Nelson occasionally making the matchday squad.
This may not be the only business that Birmingham City try to complete with Rangers after reports emerged that they would prefer to keep former Liverpool and Sheffield United defender Ben Davies at the club permanently.
Writer’s View
This could be a good move to give Ethan Laird some well-needed cover at full-back if they were willing to complete the move this window and pay Rangers a fee. Should the move be dragged out to the summer, it fills the immediate void left by Alfons Sampsted returning to FC Twente for Birmingham City. For Devine, he should wait on this campaign to develop further and get an idea of where both City and West Bromwich Albion will play next season and make a decision then.
