Barnsley FC coach Darrell Clarke has revealed that a decision looms regarding the future of on-loan midfielder Matty Craig as the January transfer window approaches.
The 21-year-old, currently on a season-long loan from Tottenham Hotspur, may return to his parent club due to limited game time at Oakwell.
Competition for Places
Craig started the season as a key player for Barnsley, featuring in nine of the club’s first ten League One matches. However, he has since fallen down the pecking order in a crowded midfield, with players like Luca Connell providing strong competition for the holding midfield role. Craig has not started a match in any competition since early October, prompting discussions about his future.
“I’m in regular contact with Matty; he’s a great pro and a good lad but he’s in an area of the pitch where there is serious competition for places,” Clarke said. “The players want to be playing games. We’ll assess that come the start of January and see where we are.”
Craig previously impressed during a loan spell at Doncaster Rovers in the second half of last season, where he gained valuable experience in League Two football. His parent club, Tottenham, retains the option to recall him in January and potentially send him out on loan to another team where he might secure more consistent minutes.
Strategic Decisions for January
Clarke, who took charge at Barnsley this summer, has made it clear he intends to use the January transfer window to refine his squad. While he acknowledges Craig’s professionalism and ability, the coach hinted that retaining players who are not contributing regularly may not align with the club’s ambitions.
“Sending back a player who is not getting game-time will give him more leeway for those he wants to bring in,” Clarke noted. This approach underlines his desire to build a team capable of pushing up the League One table.
Upcoming Fixture
Barnsley will play their final home match of 2024 against Leyton Orient on Saturday, with Clarke expecting to have the same squad available for selection. The game provides an opportunity for Barnsley to end the year on a high note and continue their push toward a strong second half of the season.
Writer’s View
Matty Craig’s situation highlights the delicate balance clubs face with loan players. While his talent is undeniable, a lack of game time at Barnsley makes a January recall by Tottenham a logical step. For Clarke, the window offers a chance to shape the squad according to his vision. If Craig does leave, Barnsley must act decisively to strengthen their midfield options and maintain momentum in the highly competitive League One.
