Bolton Wanderers Debutant Praised By Ian Evatt

Bolton Wanderers midfielder Sonny Sharples-Ahmed has received high praise after making his league debut for the club during Tuesday night’s match against Mansfield.

The 19-year-old, who came off the bench as a late substitute for John McAtee, had previously made three appearances in cup competitions but this marked his first league involvement for the club.

First Team Squad Member

Sharples-Ahmed is now officially part of Ian Evatt’s first-team squad, and his achievement highlights the ongoing success of Bolton’s academy. Since the academy was restructured in 1998, Sharples-Ahmed becomes one of 63 players to have made a first-team appearance in a senior competition for the club.

His appearance against Fleetwood in the EFL Trophy last month had already made history, as he became the first homegrown outfield player in Evatt’s starting XI since Adam Senior featured in a match against Rotherham United on New Year’s Day 2022.

Evatt expressed his pride in Sharples-Ahmed’s development, noting that his league debut was a significant moment both for the player and the club.

“Making your full league debut is something that Sonny will always remember, so it was great to give him that,” Evatt said. “It also shows the rest of our academy projects that if they do the right things and continue to work on their game as hard as they possibly can, then you can get great opportunities, and it is lovely I am sure for fans to have one of their own coming through and entering the field of play, doing well when he did so.”

Evatt also praised Sharples-Ahmed for earning his place in the squad through consistent improvement, stating that the club has now fully integrated him into the first-team setup. The Bolton manager pointed out that football is a constant, demanding effort, and that Sharples-Ahmed has made significant progress throughout the season.

Youth Tradition

Wanderers have long prided themselves on developing homegrown talent, and Sharples-Ahmed’s rise through the academy is a testament to the club’s commitment to nurturing young players. Evatt has already given first-team game time to 14 academy graduates, including players like Aaron Morley, Adam Senior, and Harry Brockbank, as well as a number of others, demonstrating the club’s belief in its youth system.

Sonny Sharples-Ahmed’s league debut is a heartening moment for Bolton Wanderers, not just for the player but for the club’s academy as a whole. With a pathway to the first team clearly in place, Sharples-Ahmed’s success provides hope that more homegrown talent can follow in his footsteps.
