Doncaster Rovers Get Promotion Push Back On Track

Doncaster Rovers revived their League Two promotion campaign with a 4-2 victory against Fleetwood Town in a pulsating encounter.

The match, filled with excitement and controversy, saw Grant McCann’s side claim a deserved win as they ended their four-game winless streak.

First-Half Fireworks

The game burst into life in the 13th minute when Joe Ironside set up Kyle Hurst, who slammed the ball in off the underside of the crossbar to give Rovers the lead. However, Fleetwood struck back against the run of play as Mark Helm bundled home an equaliser after a quick counter-attack, despite protests of offside from the visitors.

Rovers responded swiftly, regaining the lead just five minutes later through Owen Bailey’s powerful stooping header from a Jay McGrath cross. Fleetwood refused to back down, levelling again three minutes later with a composed finish from Ryan Graydon. But as the half drew to a close, Doncaster’s Billy Sharp completed a sweeping move to make it 3-2 and send the visitors into the break with the advantage.

Rovers Seal the Win

The second half was less frenetic but no less important for Rovers. Jay McGrath extended the lead in the 68th minute with a header that deflected off Rhys Bennett and into the net, effectively ending Fleetwood’s hopes of another comeback. The visitors controlled the remainder of the game to secure a crucial victory in their push for promotion.

“It’s never easy coming here,” said manager Grant McCann. “I think I’ve only ever won once here in all the times I’ve come as a manager. We had to make sure we got our gameplan right and we did that.”

The win propels Doncaster back into the promotion race, showcasing their resilience and attacking quality. With players like Kyle Hurst, Owen Bailey, and Billy Sharp stepping up, Rovers demonstrated their capability to deliver under pressure. Rovers are back at the Eco-Power Stadium on Saturday, at home to Cheltenham Town.

Writer’s View

Doncaster Rovers’ performance against Fleetwood was a timely reminder of their promotion credentials. While defensive lapses remain a concern, their attacking dynamism and ability to respond to setbacks bode well for the remainder of the season. If they can build on this result, the League Two promotion race could see them as serious contenders.
