Norwich City Ace Would ‘Prefer’ Move To European Giants

Norwich City could be set to lose their goal-scoring winger Borja Sainz amid reported interest from Spanish giants Atletico Madrid, according to Radio Popular de Bilbao.

Sainz has been in sensational form this season, scoring 11 goals in 15 Championship appearances.

Who Is Borja Sainz?

Sainz is a 23-year-old Spanish winger who joined the Carrow Road outfit in the summer of 2023 from Turkish side Giresunspor on a free transfer.

His career began in the youth set-up of Athletic Bilbao before moving to and coming through the ranks at Alaves.

After 44 appearances for Alaves, he spent a season on loan in La Liga 2 at Real Zaragoza. His next move was a free transfer to Turkey where his nine goals in the Super Lig brought him to the attention of Norwich.

The Canaries signed him in the summer of 2023. Since signing, he has played 56 times and scored on 20 occasions.

European Interest Hotting Up

The Spaniard’s superb form has meant that interest in him isn’t restricted to Atletico, with fellow La Liga side Villarreal also keeping tabs on the player.

The former Real Zaragoza man also has suitors from the Premier League and Turkish heavyweights Galatasaray, according to Football League World.

The Importance Of Sainz

Under contract until 2026, Norwich will be keen to extend Sainz’s deal beyond the next 18 months.

During the summer, the Canaries lost attacking players such as Adam Idah, Jonathon Rowe and Gabriel Sara. Sainz has stepped up and taken on the responsibility of talisman this season.

The Spanish winger is the top scorer in the Championship this season and adds so much more to the team, including:

  • 32 successful dribbles
  • 71 duels won
  • 55 recoveries

Writer’s View

Losing Sainz could be a disaster to a Norwich City side that would find themselves far worse off than their current position of 14th without his goal contribution.

Should they look to sell their top scorer, January is likely the window where his value will be at its peak and they will surely be demanding a figure above the £9 million or so received from Celtic for Adam Idah in the summer.
