Former Norwich City Star Dismissed By Current Club

Boston United has confirmed the departure of former Norwich City and Swindon Town defender Ian Culverhouse from his managerial role following a challenging start to the National League season.

Culverhouse, who recently celebrated a successful promotion campaign with the Pilgrims, struggled to translate that success into points this season, leaving Boston with just two wins out of 16 matches.

Culverhouse’s Journey with Boston United

Culverhouse took the reins at Boston United in September 2022, charged with stabilizing the team’s standing in the National League North. His efforts paid off, with Boston triumphing in the playoffs this May and securing their return to the National League. However, the shift in competition level has exposed Boston’s vulnerabilities, with defensive lapses, including a costly stoppage-time penalty at Eastleigh last Saturday, contributing to a lengthy winless streak.

Boston’s board cited the difficult start to the season as the reason for the managerial change, acknowledging Culverhouse’s achievements but ultimately concluding that a new direction was necessary.

“Boston United have parted company with first team manager Ian Culverhouse. Ian took charge at the Jakemans Community Stadium in September 2022, helping to preserve the club’s National League North status in his first season at the helm, before guiding the Pilgrims to promotion through the play-offs in May. However, a difficult start to life in the National League has led to a change being made,” said a Boston United club statement.

Paul Bastock Departs Alongside Culverhouse

In addition to Culverhouse, assistant manager Paul Bastock has also left the club. Bastock, a club icon with 679 appearances over two stints, returned to assist Culverhouse in 2022.

The revered former goalkeeper, whose record-breaking club career spanned nearly two decades, leaves after securing a third promotion with Boston United earlier this year.

Next Steps for Boston United

Boston, which has yet to register a home victory this season, now faces a critical test in the coming weeks. The team’s upcoming match against Dagenham & Redbridge on November 9 presents an opportunity to rally as they adapt to a new managerial structure. Club officials have indicated that further announcements regarding the future of the coaching staff will be made shortly.

Culverhouse’s departure underscores the challenges clubs face in maintaining momentum following promotion. While his achievements with Norwich City remain a high point of his career, his tenure at Boston highlights the stark realities of National League football.
