Neil Harris has not ruled out a January loan move for 19-year-old Adam Mayor amidst his lack of game time at Millwall.
The winger arrived in South London last January from Morecambe but has only played four games for the club and is yet to make his first start. He most recently played against Huddersfield Town in a short cameo back in April and is yet to make a matchday squad so far this season.
Loan Move An Option
Harris has had plenty of options to choose from on the flanks, with Duncan Watmore and Romain Esse his main two choices. Aidomo Emakhu has also previously been deployed out wide and Femi Azeez being a regular rotation option, providing an assist in his most recent game against Swansea City.
Speaking on Mayor’s situation going forward, Harris told the South London Press:
“I know Adam well from seeing him at Morecambe – I know what kind of player he is and the type of attributes he has got. He came on at Rotherham United (last season), made an impact and was involved in the lead up to the goal.
“For a young man, and a wide player with Millwall attributes, he just hasn’t been fortunate with injuries and opportunities at the moment.
“He will certainly be one we look at in January – what is best for him? Is it best for him to be here with us and try and effect the first team? Or is he one that needs to go out, play some football and build his development that way.
“We possibly might see Adam next week but probably more likely to be after the international break.”
Writer’s View
Adam Mayor is unlikely to get minutes at Millwall so a loan move away is certainly a good choice. A logical move would be to send him back to Morecambe but with their situation, it may not be financially possible. The Lions should aim to send him to League One and get him playing regularly with a club there. Teammate Femi Azeez thrived in the third tier with Reading last season and should Mayor do the same he could fit straight back into the side when he returns. Questions about Romaine Esse’s future could also provide a shorter-term solution for him should he leave and give him chances in the squad at The Den.
