Morecambe Boss Reveals FA Cup Hopes

Derek Adams is hopeful his Morecambe side can deliver this weekend as he targets one key factor a win would bring.

The Shrimps play National League South outfit Worthing this weekend in the first round of the FA Cup, with League Two’s bottom side looking to continue their joy in cup competition after winning two from two in the EFL Trophy.

Financial Implications Could Transform Season

A win in the first round against their Sussex counterparts would more than double their current match winnings, standing at £45,000 pounds through wins against Wigan Athletic and Nottingham Forest’s academy in the Trophy. Entering round two would also guarantee a further £20,000 whilst defeat against Worthing would only bring £15,000 back with them to Lancashire.

Morecambe are currently in the midst of a financial takeover, which has seen Adams previously state he would like more certainty around what his budget would be in the January transfer window. Cup runs have been known to transform a club’s fortunes, with Lincoln City‘s famous FA Cup run to the quarter-finals whilst in non-league aiding them in becoming EFL staples in the seasons after.

Speaking to the Lancaster Guardian ahead of the clash against Worthing, former Bradford City boss Adams was optimistic that his side could go far – and aid the club’s finances in the process.

“We have taken in about £45,000 in prize money so far this season and we will have to wait and see if we get any of that.

“At the moment we don’t have anything for January just now.

“That is up to the board and the owner (Jason Whittingham) but, in the meantime, we have to do all we can to bring in income and a good cup run will really help in that.

“It will help our turnover, which is so important in terms of the financial rules as clubs can only spend a percentage of their turnover – and cup runs are one of the best ways of doing that.”

Everyone knows the joys that come with your team going far in the cups. Fans get the chance to visit stadiums they might never see their teams play in ever again and gives them memories to last a lifetime. The financial gain that they can bring is also beneficial to the club, and with Morecambe struggling at the bottom of League Two, progression in the cup can bring them finances to help them stave off relegation in January and beyond.
