Paul Cook has discussed why he chose to substitute Vontae Daley-Campbell during Chesterfield‘s lunchtime victory over Morecambe.
The Spireites were held close by Derek Adams’ team but showed their class in the final stages to edge out ultimately a 5-2 victory in Lancashire. The defender was one of two changes made at the half, with Jamie Grimes also coming on in place of Harvey Araujo.
Cook Reveals Injury Concern
Despite a positive opening, with his ball leading to Dilan Markanday securing the opener, the 23-year-old went over the advertising hoardings and required treatment. When discussing the rationale behind the switch, former Wigan Athletic boss Cook told the Derbyshire Times “He was feeling his hamstring.”
Daley-Campbell joined Chesterfield on a free transfer this summer from Peterborough United. He failed to break through at Posh and failed to register a single competitive appearance in Cambridgeshire.
His stint at The Spirites has already been the most fruitful, making a record-high 12 appearances, the most he has made in his senior career and most at a single side since being in the academy at Leicester City.
Liam Mandeville would be the most straight-forward switch for Cook to make, having been deployed further up the field in the first half against Morecambe. Armando Dobra was brought on in place of the stricken full-back and scored the fourth goal on the day.
Writer’s View
It would be frustrating losing a player to an injury like going over the advertising boards, so for that to happen to Chesterfield is a stroke of bad luck. They have been on a good run lately and with Vontae Daley-Campbell a seamless fit, it allowed Cook to use Liam Mandeville further forward. Hopefully, he will be okay in weeks to come and with an FA Cup game to non-league Horsham coming up, has plenty of time to recover before their next league fixture against Accrington Stanley.
