Bradford City boss Graham Alexander has provided an update on the fitness of Barnsley loan defender Jack Shepherd, while illness disrupts the squad ahead of their important League Two fixture against Gillingham.
With several players impacted, the Bantams face a race against time to field a fully fit team on Saturday.
Jack Shepherd Injury Update
Jack Shepherd, who was forced off with a dead leg during Bradford’s win over Tranmere Rovers, has returned to training, and manager Graham Alexander is optimistic about his recovery. Shepherd, on loan from Barnsley, has been dealing with the injury for several weeks but has shown his resilience, determined to keep playing through the discomfort.
“Jack trained today but it’s something he’s been nursing for quite a few weeks. He’s a tough boy and he’s going to have to crack on,” Alexander explained.
While Shepherd’s recovery is a positive sign, Alexander is now battling another issue—an illness that has swept through the squad, affecting several key players.

Illness Hits Bradford Squad
Bradford’s preparations for their clash against Gillingham have been hampered by a viral illness that has sidelined multiple players throughout the week. Neill Byrne was the first to miss the game against Tranmere, and the illness has since spread, with three to four more players affected. Alexander is hopeful that with a day of rest, the squad can recover in time for the weekend fixture.
“We’ve had a couple of lads miss yesterday and a couple of different ones today. We’re hoping the break tomorrow will help give the lads a bit of space, and we have a fully fit squad on Friday,” Alexander added.
With the illness sweeping through the camp, Bradford’s lineup remains uncertain, and Alexander will be closely monitoring his players’ fitness ahead of Saturday’s crucial match.

Bradford City’s resilience will be tested as they face both injury and illness ahead of their game against Gillingham. Jack Shepherd’s return is a positive development, but the illness plaguing the squad is a significant concern. Graham Alexander’s ability to manage these disruptions and keep his side competitive could make the difference as the Bantams look to extend their winning run and stay in contention for promotion.
