Wycombe Wanderers have boosted their squad with the loan signing of Ipswich Town’s Cameron Humphreys on a season-long loan.
The midfielder is a product of the Tractor Boys’ academy system and won the club’s Young Player of the Year award in the 2021/22 season. The loan move to the League One club marks his first departure away from Suffolk.
Humphreys was a squad player for Kieran McKenna’s side during their third-division triumph, making 26 appearances across all competitions and scoring three times. Last season saw much more limited game time, only featuring nine times in the Championship.
The 20-year-old is contracted at Portman Road until 2025, signing his latest deal in 2022 following his breakout season. He now joins a Chairboys team now in their fourth straight season in League One.
Matt Bloomfield’s side have brought seven new faces to Adams Park this summer, with Sheffield Wednesday‘s Tyreeq Bakinson and Sunderland‘s Nathan Bishop dropping down a league. Bakinson has featured in all three games for Wycombe so far, alongside Luke Leahy and Josh Scowen.
The former Colchester United boss spoke to club media upon the arrival of Humphreys, saying: “Cam is a player we’ve looked at for some time and have tried to bring in previously, so we’re really pleased that we’ve been able to get the deal done.
“He’s an excellent talent on the ball who’ll give us another dimension in the middle of the park, and the data shows he will adapt well to other positions too, so we’re looking forward to seeing how he progresses over the season with us.”
He will arrive in time for Wanderers’ match at home to Rotherham United, with both sides seeking to get their first win of the season.

Cameron Humphreys is a promising signing for Wycombe Wanderers. It was clear that he is not at the level to compete for first-team places at Ipswich, which is compounded by the signings of Kalvin Phillips and Blackburn Rovers‘ Sammie Szmodics in recent weeks. Moving down to Buckinghamshire is a great move for him to gain more senior experience at a level he has proven himself at.
Wycombe do have an uphill battle to get into the League One playoffs this season. The arrivals of Rotherham, Birmingham City and Huddersfield Town have made the division much more competitive at the top and promoted sides such as Stockport County have also shown their prowess in the early stages of the season. Bloomfield’s side will be looking to consolidate what they did last season and push on to challenge for a top-six spot.
