Rotherham United manager Steve Evans has been charged with misconduct following an alleged incident after the club’s League One opener against Exeter City on Saturday.
The probe comes following the Millers’ 1-0 defeat to the Devon outfit at the weekend, after which the Scotsman was said to have ‘used improper language and/or behaviour and/or questioned the integrity of a match official in or around the changing rooms.’
Evans has until Monday 19th August to respond to the charge which could see him hit with a touchline ban or a fine if found guilty. He also courted controversy after the match for his on-pitch reaction, having appeared to refuse his opposite number Gary Caldwell’s offer of a handshake following the game and engaging in what looked like a verbal spat with his compatriot.
It’s been a mixed start to the season for Rotherham, despite a disappointing opener in the league they have progressed to the second round of the Carabao Cup following victory over Crewe Alexandra in midweek. Expectations are high at the New York Stadium, and fans will be hoping league results pick up alongside cup success.
The former Stevenage boss, who left Hertfordshire to return to Rotherham at the end of last season, is no stranger to controversial incidents, having been involved in several instances throughout his managerial career. Perhaps most notably, he received a six-game stadium ban in his first spell at the club in 2012 having been found guilty of insulting a female member of Bradford City’s staff.
Fans of the South Yorkshire outfit will be hoping Evans can stay largely out of trouble in the 2024/25 campaign as they look to bounce back up to the Championship at the first attempt; having their manager available at all times will be key to their chances.
Writer’s View
Steve Evans is well-known as a controversial figure in the EFL, being loved by fans of his clubs while often hated by others. He’s hit the headlines once again following last week’s game, and Rotherham fans will be hoping he escapes punishment-free. The 61-year-old is undeniably a fantastic manager with a great track record, and many fancy Rotherham to do well this season. They’ll be looking to bounce back from opening day defeat this weekend and in the coming games, and having Evans on the touchline will only help their chances of doing that.
