Birmingham City manager Chris Davies revealed that new midfielder Willum Willumsson is unlikely to feature in the Blues’ League One clash against Wycombe Wanderers this Saturday.
Willumsson sustained a knee injury late in pre-season and the issue appeared to surface again in Birmingham’s match against Reading. During the 1-1 draw at St Andrew’s, the Icelandic midfielder was subbed off on 51 minutes, as recorded by Whoscored.
The 25-year-old was then absent from Birmingham’s matchday squad in the 1-0 EFL Cup win at Charlton in mid-week. Willumsson was replaced in the central midfield role by a fellow new signing Luke Harris on Tuesday.
An early season injury to Willumsson could be a bitter blow to Davies and his Birmingham side. The nine capped Iceland international joined the Midlands club from Dutch side Go Ahead Eagles in July after he made 31 appearances in the Eredivisie last season, per Transfermarkt.
When looking ahead to the new signings’ chances of playing this weekend, Davies was cautious. However, as reported by Birmingham Mail, the 39-year-old manager stated that Willumsson remained in some discomfort, leading to his omission for the Charlton match.
“It’s ongoing, I haven’t got a more definitive update than that. It’s something he’s been struggling a little bit with so we will see how he is in the next couple of days.”
After just two matches in the 2024/25 campaign, Davies is already contending with injury issues. Full-back Lee Buchanan and midfielder Alfie Chang also remain out for the foreseeable future, also reported by Birmingham Mail.

Having started against Reading last Saturday, Willumsson was seemingly Davies’ go-to man in the attacking midfield department. An opening day injury will be frustrating to Willumsson and Davies. But this recent update indicates that the Icelandic midfielder may only miss the Wycombe clash.
Birmingham have plenty of alternatives to fill in the attacking midfield role. Harris and Tyler Roberts appear to be the key contenders to start at Wycombe. However, it appears likely that Harris will continue to start in place of Willumsson. The 19-year-old replaced the Icelandic player against Reading and started against Charlton in mid-week.
